This is a rough proposal for discussion purposes.  The triptych will be a series of oil paintings  on panels hung in a framework that I will design and build.  
The concept is to show the incarnation of the Messiah, his saving work and his promise to prepare a place for us.  These are shown from left to right respectively.  Simeon and Anna praise God for the fulfillment of God's promises in the infant Jesus.  This image connects old and new testaments.  The crucifixion is central to the design and to the Christian faith.  At Jesus' ascension, shown on the right, Jesus left his followers with promises to prepare a place in heaven, send his Holy Spirit to comfort and guide his people and to personally be with us.  The top and bottom panels refer to the sacraments of the Lord's Supper (top) and baptism (bottom).  These elements emphasize the sacramental nature of worship in that God comes to us through them.  
The frame will have hinged doors (shown open).  Closing the doors will reveal another set of images.  This format originates from Medieval and Renaissance Europe.  It was used in varying arrangements, sometimes becoming very elaborate.  I intend to carve text and some imagery as another catalyst for meaning.  To my thinking, the goal of liturgical art is to stimulate faith and provide a focus for contemplation.  
As this piece is intended to reference a renaissance format, I intend to work in a renaissance painting technique as well.  That will mean a monochrome underpainting with layers of thin colored paint rubbed over.  There may be elements of gold leaf as well.
Future sketches will address the closed doors and specifics of the woodworking.  I think a good option for the top panel would be a field of wheat and vineyard.  That would have the same expansive feel as the water below.  It would also relate well to the surrounding fields of Nebraska.
