I've been an amateur bonsai enthusiast for the past 4 years.  A particularily harsh January killed nearly every one of my trees the second year.  Poor conditions, bugs, my neglect, hail, and other factors have also thinned the ranks, but we march on.  Most of the trees are pesky "weeds" harvested from friends and family.  Local species such as Cedar, Mulberry, Maple, and Elm have been hardy and forgiving.  I also buy small trees at the clearance sales in June.  It's almost time to harvest some new trees.
