I'm getting ready for a commissioned pair of still life paintings based on Baptism and the Lord's Supper.  Here is a preparatory sketch for the Baptism painting.  I want to the composition to be spare and plain so that the elements (in this case, water and the word) are presented without distraction.  I think the Lord had good reasons for choosing everyday elements and everyday people by which he furthers his kingdom.  We use water all the time.  It sustains us, refreshes us, cleans us, and carries away our waste.  All these qualities can be said of our baptism as well.  So an underlying message of this set of paintings will be the "everyday" quality of the sacraments.  It's not holy water it's just water and every time we take a drink or wash our hands we can remember what God has done with water.
