Robert Henry Kinzel III died as the result of an automobile accident on Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, in Woodland Township, N.J.

He was born March 7, 1983 in Turnersville, N.J. to Marilyn Gardner Kinzel and Robert Kinzel, Jr. Robert was a graduate of Shawnee High School in Shamong, N.J. He also was a graduate of Centre College, Danville, in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology/Sociology and a minor in Biology. In December 2015, he earned a Master’s degree in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota with a 4.0 GPA. He was currently working on a second Masters in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Robert had a passionate love of nature. While attending Centre College, Rob and friends were among the first from the college to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. He was fortunate to be able to pursue these loves around the world with family and close friends. Hiking the Camino Trail across Spain, traveling to Australia and exploring Portugal were some of his many adventures.

Robert was heavily involved in the youth ministry of his high school group. He was also a member of the Centre Christian Fellowship as well as a dedicated member of Phi Tau Fraternity. These experiences led to his youth ministry work at Danville Presbyterian Church in Danville, Kentucky. Additionally, Robert worked as a Program Supervisor, Instructor and Course Leader and Patrol Leader for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) for several years. His vast adventures included expeditions in Alaska, New York, Wyoming, and Colorado, to name a few.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Lee Gardner Kinzel and his beloved grandparents, Bob and Avis Kinzel, and Elgin and Alice Gardner.

Robert is survived by his father, Robert Kinzel Jr. and a sister he adored, Meredith Lee Kinzel Manheimer. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins whom he loved. Cousins including Jamie Ripke, Matthew Kida, Tina Kent, Joseph Gardner, Hannah Gatner, Claire Warner, and Kelly Keene were all like siblings to Robert.

Services are planned for Aug. 27, 2016 at 2 p.m., at Danville Presbyterian Church at Centre College, Danville.

A luncheon will follow for all in attendance from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to joyously celebrate the life of Robert.

A memorial service in New Jersey is being planned for mid-September. Details to be determined and announced shortly to honor and share memories of Robert.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form contributions to the “Rob Kinzel Memorial Scholarship Fund” at Centre College, 600 West Walnut Street, Danville, Kentucky 40422. The purpose of the fund will be to assist students with financial needs.

Robert defined his way of life through living. Authentic, Compassionate, Curious, Devoted, Charismatic, Loved.

I watched Rob present on aspects of "Flow State" in two classes.  It's fascinating to think about how to dial up or down a challenge for the sake of the learner.  As a teacher, I find this is a central concept to student engagement.
